Hi, hoping to have some guidance here.

This fitting is located at the bottom of a staircase and is operated by a switch that also controls the lights on top of the landing.

Where do I wire in the live and neutral?

Thanks in advance.

from the pic it looks like the switched live is the left hand connection so live in there and neutral next to the earths.
the photo is slightly fuzzy but I think i can see a black and a red in the second from the left which I would consider to be the perm live with the black (which should be sleeved brown these days or red in the old days) going off to the switch.
so live in first connector from the left and neutral in the third connector from the left and the earth in the fourth.

I feel the 2 reds left are perm live and switch feed, next is black switched live and red to second light, next 2 black neutrals

But no harm will be done connecting the light to either of the left terminals, one will be always on and the other will be controlled by the switch.

Classic situation where neon or led screwdriver will find it instantly.

Right, wired it in.
There wasn't a light connected, which is why I needed the advice.
Unfortunately it seems to be a dud outlet. The light doesn't come on no matter how is wired in.

Thanks for the help

Did / does one switch control the fitting in your picture as well as the lights on the landing ?
Did the fitting in your pic work previously ?

One switch downstairs, and another on the landing operates the landing light.
Just moved in, and the bottom light was removed, so don't know if it ever worked?
The landing light is connected via updated live and neutral only.
I'm assuming that at some point the bottom light and landing light must have been controlled by both the landing switch and the switch at the bottom of the stairs.

Multimeter time!

Yes ,testing required. What do you mean by " updated live and neutral" at landing light ?
