Put the red in the Common and black in the other (variously marked).
It doesn't actually matter in your switch but may in more complicated ones so best 'get into the habit'.

The black should be sleeved in red - sleeve or tape.

Is there no 'earth' at all in the cable or has it been cut off?

As EFLImpudence,
the red goes to com and black in to one way.
No earth cable: This is not unusual on wiring of an age.
Earth/cpc was not used on lighting circuits many moons ago, so on installation that pre-date the 1970's you will often find circuits like this. In some cases the earth has been cut back and you can find it within the grey PVC sheath of the cables, if twin and earth and within the grey sheath of the phase/red conductor if singles.
It is important not to use metal fitting on non-earthed circuits.
