We have several large conifers at the bottom of the garden (7-8m high) and i was wanting to light across them at night just so you can see them. not floodlight lighitng, something more subtle. It wouldnt be on all night, or every evening, just when we have people round. I was thinking mount it a few metres in front of the trees, to the side so it cast light across them all

What sort of light would be best, or is there a specific type to use?

A couple feet in front, shining upwards. Spaced depending on brightness of flood. Try them on leads and extension at night to get the feel. Coloured gel over lens may look good too. Greens and purple.

I know he said "not a floodlight" but I do theatre/tv lighting for a living.
People underestimate how much light you need to chuck at something outdoors
Small floods will light bushes and trees very well. Not talking 50-100w LEDs- much smaller and more

One of the supermarkets shot their Christmas TV commercial in a street not far from where I live, a couple of years ago. Lotsa lights. Including an artificial moon, which looked fab - maybe the OP could have one of those
