Given that your electrics "may be" a bit old, and your lights keep flickering, what do YOU think you should do? Its clearly worrying you a little, to have posted on this forum.

However, we like seeing old and dangerous stuff, so before you get an inspection done, post some pictures for us

It may be a problem in your house or it may be local supply problem. Do your neighbours have similar problems. If they do then contact your electricity supply company.

He only mentioned that the lights were flickering.

If it were the sockets etc I think he would probably have said so.

Lets add a couple of other questions:

is it just the lights or other things too that are affected?

is it all the lights or just certain rooms?

can we see a pic of your fuseboard?

Thanks for your replies. Im going to get an electrician to check things out just in case.

Good call :)

Either get one thru recommendation/reputation or at www.competentperson.co.uk

Its worthwhile checking he/she has the 2391 qualification in inspection & testing. Some electricians are only installers and may not be the best bet to do an inspection. NAPIT full scope members do have this as a condition of membership. I believe that NICEIC and ECA members do not.
