I've got a nice lilac tree (syringa) in my garden. However, it seems to have created a dense pack of roots around itself.
I have tried to plant some small shrubs or plants in its vicinity but they don't seem to like the soil. Are there any plants you would recommend which would be happy competing with the lilac's roots? The soil is of a neutral type but is clay under the topsoil. The area gets some sun in the afternoon.
