I'm going to render a small building that is partially stone and block.

It is slightly exposed so hydraulic lime seems right from what I have read.

But I'm unsure of the consistency, is it a problem to have quite a wet mix?

Also I saw on Utube that a primer coat of watery mortar was "hauled" or thrown on before the scratch coat-is this necessary?

I have done some rendering with hydrated lime, is hydraulic lime any different?

Hydraulic lime will set quicker and harder than Hydrated. The last guy who did any lime rendering for me must have been about 10 years ago, he sprayed the scratch coat on like K-rend so it must have been pretty wet.
Try posting in the plastering forum.

For a lime render you use (approx) 3:1 sand to NH lime (common in most Building Suppliers).
Dont go messing with lime putty or steeped lime - keep it simple & safe.

Wear gloves and glasses.

Take the suction out of the background.
Use a splatter slurry if you think it needs it.
Scratch on a coat.
Lay on the 10mm - 12mm backing coat.
