Hi all- my first post !

I am wanting to break through into a new extension. My existing house has common london brick and a hardish breeze type of block.

i want to create a 30 inch opening

i was going to use prestressed concrete lintels but wondered what to sit them on either side in the walls.

I was thinking of the solid clinker type brick or am i just being too fussy?

If using a concrete lintel just seat it on normal brick / block work as long as they aren't soft / falling apart they will be ok. 30" opening is only a small span but make sure the lintel is sized to carry the load from above.

In other words if it's carrying 1 or more storeys don't use a 70mm - use a 145mm or whatever is appropriate. Ensure the lintel has 150mm seating either size of opening so add 300mm to your total opening size.

Nice Pic.

for a 30" opening, p.c.c. lintels are fine.

generally they only require 100mm bearing.
