I have just discovered the reason why my kitchen lights have been dimming and intermittently shorting.

I have lifted the boards in the bedroom above and found a spagetti junction box with what appears to be an oily liquid and some green stuff on a couple of the cables and in the box causing a short.

Is this the cable breaking down or something else?

what is the remedy?

thanks

on closer inspection the green is actually seems to be only a slight coating on the end of the grey sleeving on a couple of the cables.

The liquid itself is more like an oil, it looks as though someone has squirted some WD40 into the Junction Box...

It seems to be either coming out of the cable or permiating into the cable as when I pull back the grey sheathing there is liquid in there.

does this make any difference?

thanks for the help

I think you should advertise it and charge local electricians £10 a look, lots of people have heard of it but never seen it.

I guess I'm one of the lucky few ;)

Should have taken photos. Could have made my fortune selling them. :D

I found some in my first week as a apprentice, I blamed it for tripping the breaker, then realised that my lives had come out in the next socket
