I’m in abit of a pickle as to what do to with my living room.

I recently had a painter and decorator that did my hallway, stairs and landing but he did a shoddy job. He was going to do my living room aswell but we do not want him touching it. He was going to strip old lining paper off, paper new lining paper, paint it and then paper a feature wall (chimney breast). The walls themselves underneath are not not terrible but not good enough to just have painted due to lumps and bumps. We are unable to carry out any work ourselves due to disabilities. Ideally, we would want the walls skimming but we currently cannot afford that.

We have since had painters and decorators come to give quotes and all their advice and recommendations differ and contradict each other (Strip old lining, don’t strip old lining and just patch and repair then paint or just put down paintable wallpaper all around and then the feature wallpaper for the chimney breast).

We are now at a loss as to what to do for the best going forward. If we went down the textured wallpaper route, I think we would need replace the wallpaper we was going to have for the feature wall as that would no longer stand out from textured wallpaper on the other walls. And then depending on which feature wallpaper we would choose to replace , the paint colour we have bought may also have to change.

I will attach some pictures of the current state of my living room walls, the feature wallpaper we have bought, the paint colour we have bought and the laminate that will be laid next Saturday. (We are pushing it for time!) I will also attach a links to the sofa that will be delivered on the 17th.

The sofa we are getting:

So as you can see from the photos attached, we chose that grey and copper textured wallpaper for the feature wall and the Matt fog paint for what we thought would be going on fresh lining paper. We thought that these would go really nice with the grey sofa and the laminate. But now being advised to have textured wallpaper (which would be painted fog grey), we feel that the grey copper feature wall would no longer stand out. Also, as to what type of textured wallpaper, I have no clue. I just want the living room to look modern and to look nice in time for Christmas.

As this is a DIY forum, not an interior design one, I'm going to suggest we disregard choice of colours and patterns, and think about the plaster surfaces and how to decorate them.

What is wrong with the old lining paper?

Cannot it not just be repaired with filler here and there, then re-painted?
