It seems so be a common thing now for the foundation depth to be checked before removing a load bearing wall. We have plans created by an engineer to remove the wall between our kitchen and dining space and need to have the builders check the foundation depth but having contacted several builders and showed them the plans only 1 has actually mentioned the process for doing the check. Would really like to get an idea on the process for this, are there different ways of doing it? And the additional cost this adds when removing a loading bearing wall? TIA

It's not common.

The engineer should be able to make an educated assumption, and only require validation if his design calculation is close to what the assumed strip would be able to bear.

The process is digging a hole to determine the foundation depth and width.
