Can anyone give me a childs interpretation of the load i will be imposing on a wall (new attic floor). The imposed load is 3.75kN per metre.

I understand this is a light load, but cannot quantify it in my head.

Not that light..
Works out around 380kg/m which is equivalent to four 15 stone blokes standing on the wall per meter of wall.. so swashed together pretty tight

ok, that sounds quite heavy then. Is this normal for house builds?

i assume my "first floor" floor is showing a similar weight load? This has the joist buried into the wall when built.

Well its usual for a domestic floor that spans exactly.. 5m ..
Assuming its just the imposed load on the wall, so doesnt include the dead load from the floor/board/ceiling etc which can be about the same load..

Yes your first floor will be the same if its spans the same distance..

Dead Load = 0.75kN/m (S.L.S.)
Imposed Load = 3.75kN/m (S.L.S.)

So does this mean i have a total load of 4.5 ?

These are the calcs from the SE.

The span will be 3.8m to the central piece of steel. then the other side of the room is a span of 3.5m.

Sounds a bit odd to me. Normal domestic loading is 1.5kN/m² live load and about another 0.75 to 1.0 kN/m² for dead load. 0.75 being more usual for an internal floor. The live load is not calculated, it is taken straight from British Standard 6399. A load of 3.75kN is right up there with assembly halls and public meeting places so is far too much for a domestic floor.

Per m run on the wall Jeds.. so equivalent to 2.0kN/m2 over the area dead and live so a little on the light side if you ask me.. but its only an attic so probably no partition..
