I'm plumbing in our kitchen (no ceiling or walls boarded yet), and we think it prudent to install a cold water supply to the location of the fridge, in case we go for one with a chilled water supply.

For those that have fitted these in the past, where is the best place to put the outlet/connection?

The supply will be from above - should I chase it into the wall, or just leave a 15mm spigot poking out of the ceiling? if it's in the wall, should I put it directly behind the fridge, or alongside behind an adjacent kitchen unit?

15mm what? All of the chilled water dispensing units I've encountered are fed by clear plastic tubing of around 10mm OD. It was the same with pub style ice makers.

I used micro-bore pipe I had in stock, quite a shocking install, as someone it seems did not know what safe routes are, but I did, so hit an electric cable with my hacksaw blade, in spite of RCD protection it knocked me out.

But the Hoover fridge/freezer is long gone now, and still a washing machine connection sticking out of the wall, the modern versions have storage bottles within the fridge door and filled manually.

So it means the new fridge/freezer sticks out from the wall due to the water connection. Even a socket behind the fridge/freezer can cause problems with the unit then sticking out. Ours have special sockets just for the fridge/freezer and freezers, battery backed, not the neatest of installs. And still held away from the wall by old sockets.

Don’t they have an adapter or reducer of some description from 15mm?

@Ouch77 - you ought to be careful. If you prepare this pipe and decide against a fridge it’s those requirements then you have possibly created a dead leg in your plumbing supply.

There will be a plethora of adaptors/reducers out there, but the problem will be finding the right one to suit your needs.
Contact the chiller supplier first and confirm water connection requirements before you purchase a domestic chiller. Those installing chillers/ice makers for a living will have a van stocked with all sorts of adaptions, but you will be on your own and in my experience lone voices are seldom heard.

I ran a 15mm plastic John Guest pipe around and under all the kitchen units to get to the fridg, approx 8 metres long. Then fitted a washing machine valve to connect to the water supply pipe of the friidge freezer.

Fridge water supplies tend to drop to 10mm plastic push fit and head into a filter, then onto the fridge freezer (FF). The whole installation tends to come with it's own adapters etc. You need to have the ability to either pull out the FF to service the filter etc easily or alternatively the isolation and the filter is located in a unit or space next to it.

Thanks all, I think I'll copy @HERTS P&D approach and run JG from the sink supply around the perimeter of the kitchen at low level - this allows me to isolate the spur if it's not used, and also fit a PRV for that and the dishwasher - we have crazy high static water pressure. Plus less chases and mess which is a bonus.

Same here, they typically fit W/M valves.
