My neighbour says that locks on your home need to be british standard locks otherwise you house insurance is invalid.

I have chcked mine and some are not british standard.
What's the best place to get locks that are british standard and do I have to change teh long long in my conservatory door?

Hi Kevin,
Some insurance companies will stipulate that you must have british standard locks on your doors, it is important that you check your own insurance documents to confirm if you need to upgrade your locks. I would suggest taking a look at http://www.locksfordoorsandwindows.co.uk/insurance_approved_locks for a rough guide. They also offer the type of lock you will most probably need for your conservatory http://www.locksfordoorsandwindows.co.uk/insurance_rated_euro_cylinders If you get stuck they also have an online messenger for any questions you may have.

thanks, in case anyone else has the same question - it turns out that you don't have to replace the hole metal strip in teh conservatoyr door. just the cyclinder

Hi.

as previously mentioned, check your own insurance documents - they all vary in what is required.

here is a a guide made from Master Locksmiths Association and the ABI

http://cusworth.net/wp-content/uploads/Guidelinesforsecurity.pdf

common sense roughly as follows:

All windows on ground floor or accessible by flat roof etc should be locked with key

Wooden side/ rear/ patio doors should be locked with 5 lever or better mortice lock. Additional key locking internal bolts fitted to top and bottom of door should be fitted. Pay special attention to the hinges and strike plate on frame, which should match the lock.

On French windows / rebated patio doors should have fixed leaf fitted with key locking bolts

outward opening doors should be fitted with hinge protector dogs.

all PVC doors should be fitted with multi point locking and have good quality cylinder which does not protrude more than 5mm from door furniture. Consider fitting security handles to protect lock from attack
