hello all. when people lower the ceilings in a loft conversion, what happens to the existing ceiling joists? are they removed and if so, how do you prevent
the roof spreading?

if anyone can tell me what the process is and a possible diagram on how the work is done, i would be very greatful.

thanks in advance

You can use plywood gussets screwed and glued to the sides of each rafter
and a corresponding (new) floor joist at the lower level, or just pieces of timber at an angle instead of the plywood.

Inspectors sometimes over-play the possibility of roof spread. If your roof has two purlins to each slope, that will help reduce the tendency as well.

thank you very much tony. is this normaly ok for building regs?
