I am considering a loft conversion and obviously need to get power up to the loft.

We have a redundant supply cable from the consumer unit direct into the loft that used to be for an electric shower, can this be pressed into service for new power ring and lighting circuits by the addition of a small consumer unit up in the loft?
Would this be acceptable?
Would it need Part P certification as the existing circuit is already in existence albeit for another use?
Thanks.

I assume that you actually mean would it be notifiable? I think by most people's interpretation fitting a consumer unit to feed the sockets and lights would be the creation of two new circuits (one for each from the new unit), even though the feed cable is already there, so would be notifiable, although if you're not going to have bulding control involved for any other aspect of the conversion, you can weigh up whether it would be worth it. If you used the existing cable to feed the sockets directly (extend as a 4 sq. mm radial with 30/32A protective device at the origin) and install an FCU for the lights, then it wouldn't.

Hi thanks that's clear.

Yes Building Regs would be involved otherwise the room created would not be habitable which is the main purpose of the project.
