Hi all,

planning on building a deck for light storage in my loft, the span is about 4.5m without any support. Would 6 x 2 do the job?

Thank you.

What would the ends of the joists rest on?

basically a glorified shelf, that would be plenty assuming a reasonable spacing, as long as they won't deflect into any ceiling or other thing that might get damaged. However make sure the joists are held vertically in a line to avoid them falling over (racking) e.g. use some noggins.

I assume the existing joists are deemed insufficient to carry even a light load, in which case the new joists would have to be at least as deep, plus x inches.

Otherwise you could board it out.
