Hi,

I'm planning on building some raised decking in my garden and was just after some advice on the supporting structure if possible. I have been looking around on the internet and everyone seems to have their own ways of doing this and seems to be no set way of doing this.

I'm planning on using 100 x 50mm joists if these are adequate? with 100 x 100mm supporting timber, cemented approximately 500mm in the ground?

I would like to build the supporting structure all on one level, so I plan to fix the intermediate joists between the supporting joists with say 100mm wood screws.... (I would stagger the joists to fix all joists at both ends).

Images attached showing the spans etc - Could anyone confirm if my method is ok and the spans are ok?

Any advice welcome.

Thank you,

Ben

Red = Main Supported Joists
Green = Intermediate Joists @ 400mm centres (I would cut noggins in also)
Blue = 100 x 100mm Timbers

My images appear to be thumb nail size and un-readable....
Does anyone know how I can post these bigger?

I have put them at approx. 1000mm centres... so these could go further apart? 3no across the width would be adequate?

Also are the 2300mm spans on the 100 x 50mm timbers all ok?

Thank you for your help.

Ben

What is the height of the deck from the ground?

Is this a freestanding deck or is it attached to a building(s)?

Is the garden flat or sloped?

There is an enormous resource of deck building (and deck collapsing) information on the internet.

There are also a number of popular books available on amazon etc. ref deck building, many have detailed plans.

Hi,

Thank you for your response.

The deck is completely free standing, it is filling the far end of my garden and is between 3 sides of the fence.
I am planning to put a shed on the far end (smaller square alcove area) - (1830 x 2730mm area).
The garden is slightly sloped, but not excessively.
The decking will be no more than 100 - 200mm raised off the ground.

I've been struggling to find information on spans and post supports.

Your advice is much appreciated.

Thank you,

Ben
