I wish to board part of the loft area of my garage for light storage and would like to increase the width of the opening to wider than one joist.
The trusses and joists are 37 cm apart. The timbers are 83mm high by 36mm wide. There is no ceiling fitted to the joists.
Is it possible to cut out a section of a joist, insert a cross piece and refix the cut ends the cross pieces as is done on traditional roofs?
Do the adjacent joists need to be reinforced? If so over what distance.
Thanks
