What if any Regs or Certificates will be needed for installing a Fire barrier in a 1900s built terrace house shared Loft space ?
Do I have to inform my local council ?
If there was none there previously and the work does not involve any structural work, then its not a material alteration and won't need approval under building regulations.
If you have been asked by someone to fit this, eg insurers, then you may need the work and system to be certified as meeting the performance standard you required.
the property is currently under offer and the lack of barrier is an issue .We have agreed to have a barrier installed . D the previous comments on no regs or building control still apply ?
If you have agreed to an unspecified barrier, then you build any old thing.
If you have have agreed to form a barrier of a particular type and in accordance with a particular standard, and get it certified to a specific level, then you do that.
You can't make building regulations apply and get building regulations approval if they don't apply. But you can make them apply if your barrier construction invokes building regulations - eg a structural barrier. However, in that case you will get certified approval for the structural work, not for the fire resistance.
The wise thing would have been to have resisted the request for a barrier on the basis that the property met the building standard in force when it was built, and you are under no obligation to improve it.
