Hi guys,

New homeowner here and new to all forms of DIY beyond hanging pictures! Just wondered if you guys had any general advice for insulating my loft.

Basically, I've just bought a mid-terrace victorian house with a barrel roof (picture 1). The loft is split in two, each one a mirror picture of the other. I've got access to one half but access to the other has been plastered over (another project for me in due course). Basically I'd like guidance/advice on how best to go about getting some more insulation up there. Currently, there are joists of ~10cm running the length of the attic. I could lay insulation between these as has been done previously but what would be the best approach to increasing this? Laying another set of joists perpendicular to the ones already there? And what do I do about the middle of the attic where the eves are very low? Can I put boards between the actual eves and pack insulation in the space between that and the joists?

Any advice you guys have would be greatly appreciated!

Lay insulation between the joists that have none to build up the height. You don’t need to add more joists just lay more insulation at 90 degrees across the whole of the loft. Don't tuck it in too much at the eaves as you will need some air circulation.

Try not to cover any wiring. If you have spot lights or halogen lights there are specialist covers to protect the insulation from the heat.

No doubt someone will be along with more advice shortly.

Thanks mate. The only reason I was considering adding more perpendicular joists was to increase the depth of insulation whilst providing a structural support for a walkway once its laid. Need to figure out if rolls of loft insulation would serve me better than insulation panels given the depth needed.
