Hi our loft has what looks like really old loft insulation in it. Could someone let me if I can buy new and lay over the top or should we get rid and start again. About to have some work done on the roof and would like to get this sorted at same time. Thanks in advance

There is nothing to stop adding to it, but I would personally get rid of any manky stuff and have all new and clean. But I am an electrician and often have to deal with the old dirty, dusty stuff. So I am bias.

That's great thanks Sorry another question down the centre of the loft has been boarded over which has squashed down the insulation, I've read about raising joists and this isn't something we can do so I'm wondering what to do. Someone I read mentioned celotex or kingspan being used under the floorboards is this a better option that regular insulation? Thanks again.

100mm of Kingspan etc. is equivalent to 150mm of rockwool. But you have to cut it to size to feel the full benefit and it is not cheap.
If you've got the headroom (I'm assuming here you have a cut roof rather than trusses) and you want to keep the place boarded out then just fix 4 x 2s to the top of your existing joists.
