I need to reinsulate my loft ahead of next autumn. The current insulation is not deep enough to current standards. Can I lay directly over the existing insulation to make up the extra depth or are there certain materials that shouldn't be laid next to each other.

No problems mixing materials. Just take care not to bury any electric cables under deep insulation to avoid possible overheating. This advice is however most relevant to any cables carrying significant loads as for electric shower or immersion heater.
