I am raising my loft joists (100mm) by putting new joists (170mm) across the old ones (perpendicular?), I plan to add more insulation and board an area so I can store stuff up there.

My question is: how should I fix the new joists in place? Do I screw them down from top to bottom, long screws required (170mm+), or can I just go into both at an angle, using shorter screws?

Seemed obvious until I realised how long the screws need to be going top down.

Regards,
Bester

I used these + a washer...

With a pilot drill and a 20mm spade bit to go part way through the new joist.
