If I already have 8 by 4 joists in my loft, will I still need to add extra joists or can I just put Boards over the existing 8 by 4's.

yes you can just board over the existing,but if they are fairly old put new ones the same size and fasten them to the old then board over them

There is no need at all to add extra joists provided you buy special re-enforced loft boards. These re-enforced boards are required if the gap between the joists is any more than 40 cm. I think the boards are re enforced with fibreglass. happy loft converting
