Hi all. Another newbie here. I am just thinking of extending into the loft for an additional bedroom. There are a few obstacles though....

Firstly, in my type of house (1950's semi in Longbenton) there seems to be no other similar houses with velux windows.

I have looked in the loft and it.cramped. It has a wall going accross the middle of the loft where the chimney is and lots of wooden joints at about waist level upwards.

Do you think this is a non starter? Can you convert the loft space for a bedroom without a window? I assume you need permission for the window?

Any help or advice is really appreciated.

Thanks, Paul.

It doesn't sound promising, with all loft conversions if you are making the space into a living space, bedroom, study, bathroom etc. you have to provide a proper staircase, not a ladder. Which nearly always is the stumbling block for most conversions as they in themselves require space at the lower level usually at the expense of a room you already use. So can be a bit of a catch 22 situation create a bedroom in the attic but loose half a room below to get access to the attic. The joists at waist height you describe are ties for the truss rafters and can't just be removed without specialist advice. Speak to an architect or structural engineer to get proper advice on if/how you can proceed.
