Hi
I recently moved to a property and need to make the loft into a storage area for boxed items.
Having never undertaken a project like this, but am very comfortable working with tools and timber, I am seeking some opinions/advice on how to get it done. After looking around the loft, which is a proper mess, I see my rafters are 4x2 on 14" centres. There are 3 "binders" in the loft-space running the length of the loft. The majority, if not all, of the walls in the property are load-bearing.
The access is good, and, in theory, I can get 4 or 5 metre lengths of timber into the loft without much issue.
Apologies if my terminology is incorrect, but I have skimmed some of the posts here and tried to garner naming conventions so I could explain my situation.
I am ordering materials in the next 24 hours for delivery.
My first few questions are:-
Should I cross batten or run on top of existing rafters?
If I cross batten, what measurement of centres should I use?....and therefore, what thickness of flooring should I employ?
What type/length of screws, and "fixing pattern" do I need?
How do I fix the ends of any timbers which I install, to the walls below?
Also, can anyone advise me how to put up a diagram so what I am describing is clearer as it is even confusing to myself when I read what I have written. lool
Appreciate any tips on how to get going.
HG
ps...please let me know if I need to tell you any more about the space I am trying to floor....thanks
