neighbour having trouble with replacement water tank in loft. Would it be possible to do away with the tank altogether and hook it up to the mains?
Any help would be very helpful

Assuming this water tank feeds the cylinder, you can't simply bypass the header tank without changing the cylinder to a pressurised sealed system, which will be an additional cost. Depending on the size of the house and water requirements it may be wiser to install a combi.

What's the problem with replacing the header tank?

it would be possible. and very messy  .

do you mean the cold water storage or heating header?

take it you mean cold water storage cistern that feeds the hot water cylinder. if so no, you cant just hook the cylinder to the mains you could try but i doubt your neighbour will forgive you if not dead  . if its the heating side it will depend on certain things like if your boiler has overheat stat then you could probably use a robokit sealed system design.best to get some pro advice.

He is being messed around by the merchant who says they have ordered a new tank but it is taking an age to arrive.
Thanks for answering the question so quickly, as I told my neighbour, this site and it's patrons are worth their weight in gold !!

Is it the heating fe tank or the cold water storage? Both are readily available in any diy store, so not sure what the dealer is on about!

Messed about by a merchant?!?! you sure? its only a tank...
tell him to get down to B&poo Whore house and get one off the shelf!
