Wife and I are on the brink of divorce, we're on a weekend away in a lovely log cabin complete with log burner, very romantic.

Got me thinking about my potential exit and how cool it would be to buy land somewhere and have one of these built to my precise specs.

I'm thinking one floor, one bed, one bathroom and open plan kitchen/diner/living space. It would be the ultimate man cave like I've always dreamed of.

Didn't know where else to ask about the workings of this and the cost so here I am.

I'd want to use good quality materials, this cabin I'm in now isn't actually logs they look like tongue and groove joists probably 3" x 7" that's all internal and external walls, I'd want it fully insulated, gas central heating, a house basically.

I'm thinking about 60m2 to 80m2 in floor space.

    Thoughts anyone?

    LeeDowner, good evening.

    Really sorry about your "situation"

Up here there are several Designers + Manufacturers of "Log Cabins" Some of these Cabins are really high end, right down to "I want a Cabin on top of that small hill including a road in"

Suggest you google "Log cabin design and manufacturers" and if necessary include "in Scotland" I know that these manufacturers in Scotland do and will undertake a design and build anywhere in the UK, at a cost???

    Ken.

Log cabins arent ideal construction for our damp, wet climate.....at least the solid wall type

However, you could easily get a timber frame build made by a local carpenter. Im building a garden office with insulation to building regulation standard...its quite straightforward.

The key is to have timber studwork, covered with tyvek breathable membrane. Then 50 x 25 battens are fitted vertically to create a cavity. Then the cladding goes on.

The great advantage of this method is that the breather membrane is the weatherproofing and it doesnt matter if water gets through the cladding itll just down the cavity.

A timber frame like this would almost certainly be more energy efficient than your house.

You might want to look for garden studios -there are specialist kit builders around.
Or look into SIPs construction - expensive but very quick onsite construction

needs full planning permission so your plot must be allowed to be used for a domestic dwelling so for an example a romantic "plot in forest " may not work unless you are attending a charcoal making kiln as part off the forest husbandry and the accommodation can be be proved vital to the operation off the woodland
in other words you need a plot specifically with planning for a dwelling or apply to make it compliant
