However, I don't recall tins being shaken at me after 11/9, nor the Madrid bombings.

The tsunami thing went silly. It's good for people to donate money, but people just went stupid. Everywhere you went there was someone shaking a tin, and people who never ever give to charity normally boasting because this ONE TIME that they ever chose to donate they give £50.
