With the feed in and feed out, is it entirely optional on whether this takes place at switch or the light fitting?

I tend to base it on practicality and minimising cable runs. I would love to hear from the experts.

Yes, it's up to you. Makes no difference.

If you were to use single cables in conduit (as opposed to twin and earth) you could have Line(live) looped at the switch and Neutral looped at the lights.

Thanks. I had somebody suggest that you should never be looping at lights in the case of external lights. Apparently, you should only be taking the switch cable out to external lights. Any rationale to this?

Not really.

PIR sensor lights would need a permanent line as well.

With just a light there would be no point - presuming he means the switch cable coming back from the light as well.

He was suggesting that moisture is not good for the feed cables and therefore, only switch cable should be going outdoors. In one instance I have 4 cables going to my external light: feed in, feed out, switch and link to another light.

I don't want to alter this unless I absolutely have to.

Obviously water in outside lights (not actually affecting the cables) can be a problem causing RCDs to trip.

I would not have had the feed in and feed out routed like that so, if that's what he meant, I suppose I agree.

However, you don't have to alter it. If you get a problem, then you will have to do something anyway.

That could be done, and the lights would work OK, but you might find some unwelcome hums coming out of your expensive audio equipment!

Kind Regards, John

If at switches then I prefer deeper back boxes - at least 35mm as lots to "cram" in with a shallow box.

@Taylortwocities are you less concerned about the set of cables that I have at the external light fitting? I had a further look and I could relocate them at the switch if there is a compelling reason to do so.

No. My concern is about your ability to do any electrical work, of any sort, without having to resort to having to ask for advice from a DIY Internet forum.

I can allay your fears by confirming that I have done plenty now and of course, constantly learning. Hence the incessant questions...
To be fair this seems to be a question with different answers/perspectives and that's what I wanted to understand.
