There was a suggestion that a PIR light would require a permanent live. Presumably a switch wire when the switch is set to the "on" position satisfies this requirement? I appreciate that the PIR light would not function when the switch is set to the "off" position.

That's the normal way that you can control a PIR that has a "pulse over-ride" mode.
