We had some oak spindles fitted, which were fine, but with the cold weather the spindles have become quite loose and rattle about a bit. Is there any way to fix this? I'm not sure how they were attached, but as they were fine before, I think this is to do with the wood shrinking a bit.

cheers

i would try squirting a bit of pva into the gaps.
pics would be good,as we do not know how they have been fitted?

You could secure with panel pins, pre drill with 2mm hss bit.Wood glue might help is there are large gaps.
If anything cold damp weather will make them expand.

I reckon the spindles rattle because the enviroment they are in now is drier than before they were fitted, despite the weather.

Rubbing a little pva into the joint where they meet the top and bottom rails should do the trick.

Just remember to use a damp rag to remove any excess glue.

polyurethane glue might work better in this case. It expands slightly when drying and will help fill the joint better, PVA is best on close fitting joins.

I use titebond brand but gorilla glue is also good. Dont try to wipe off excess when it's wet, presuming the exposed wood is varnished just wait until it is dry and it'll scrape off fairly easily.

Don;t get it on your hands, it really is a pain to get off.
