Loud rushing pumped water tank

Hi everyone,

I’ve just moved into an apartment with a Stuart Turner Monsoon twin pump installed beside the hot-water cylinder. It boosts both the hot and cold water pressure throughout the flat.

Whenever any tap runs, I hear a very loud “ssshhhh” or rushing-water noise from the tank/pump area — you can hear it all over the apartment. The sound stops a few seconds after the tap is turned off.

You can hear the sound in this video I took:

I’d love to know:
– Does that sound normal for a system like this?
– Could it be air in the system or a pipework design issue (too much flow velocity)?
– Any ideas for reducing the noise or confirming if it’s just the way these systems operate?

Thanks a lot for any advice — I’m still learning how this plumbing setup works and would appreciate any insight.

Is it pumping from the cylinder (hw) and the loft tank (cold water)?

I have no knowledge of plumbing. I'm really hoping this noise isn't normal for a pumped water system because it seems very excessive.

Where is the cold water cistern? Is it in the same place? Could be the cistern filling.

If it's rented then any concerns should be taken to the landlord and ask them to explain what's going on.

Not connected to the noise you're hearing, but flexible connectors are not supposed to be used like that.
They're supposed to be almost straight - to adsorb vibration.
Not tightly curved to connect up the piping.

I own the apt now. Not renting. I’ve been looking into it a bit more and I realize now that the noise is not from the pump at all, but from the combination cylinder itself refilling. It sounds like very high-pressure water jetting into the metal top section of the cylinder, almost like a power washer inside a drum. The whole thing echoes through the apartment whenever a tap runs, then stops a few seconds after the tap is closed.
From the videos I’ve found online, most refill setups seem almost silent — just a gentle pour or even fully underwater fill — whereas mine sounds like a high-pressure blast. So I’m wondering if anyone’s seen this kind of thing before?
Could it be that the mains pressure is just too high, and the built-in valve is a noisy type?
Has anyone actually fixed a similar noise successfully — maybe by fitting a pressure-reducing valve or swapping in an equilibrium or quiet-fill valve?
That’s just my guess based on what I’ve read, so happy to be corrected if I’m wrong.
Would love to hear from anyone who’s come across this setup or dealt with the same noise before.

If it's a combination cylinder then all you need to do is get on top as that should be able to be opened and then see what's going on, careful as you could get wet.
No it shouldn't sound quite like that and yes a PRV could be fitted but TBH the fill valve should be able to handle all of that.
