Lower door hinge moves when closing

Looks like your door is hitting the door check at the bottom hinge going by the paint markings.
Regarding the new screws, a door frame is normally 45mm thick, I'm wondering what the other 35mm has screwed into ?

About the chop in distance, I think i don't understand what you're saying.

Don't get me wrong, i'm sure you know your stuff, i'm just struggling to wrap my head around exactly how the chop in distance affects the way the hinge closes.

Any chance you could explain in different words, or maybe show me a video that would help?

Ok look at this photo of the hinge on my doors and how it is cut into the door and door frame.

The hinge is set into the door and the frame/lining equally.

Your hinge leaf of your frame appears to be further forward than the leaf on the door. If you were able to shut your door you would see 5mm+ of the inside edge of the door frame, you need to pull the hinge back and refix.

nope, those paint scuffs are from where i lean a 20kg olympic plate against the door to hold it in place while i was working on the frame

RE: New screws: they are screwed into Wood, definitely. 100% certain. There is at least 80mm of wood between the frame and the masonry

I'm sure you'll know the sound and feeling of manually driving a screw into wood. A certain rustling crunch of wood fibres compressing and moving out of the way. It was like that all the way down, i must have especially thick doorframes.

this is a relatively old house and ive lived here over 20 years, perhaps the 45mm standard is newer?

alright, moving the hinges back a bit is the next step i will try, this feels pretty certain to work

I ended up moving the top hinge back 5mm, and the lower hinge back about 8mm, took a few tries to get the latter right, but now everything is fantastic and functional and the door closes cleanly!
