Lubricating a rim cylinder lock

Is WD40 suitable for lubricating a rim cylinder lock please?

A tip I learned was to use graphite dust from an ordinary pencil which certainly does a very good job, but it isn't very easy to get it into the plug and pins.

The last time I did this the point of the pencil broke in the lock and I had a b*****d of a job getting it out!

Yo can buy powdered graphite in a puffer bottle, and this is "puffed" into the keyway. Graphite is a horrible substance to work with though, and its a pain to get off your skin, carpets, walls etc. WD40 will just attract dust and eventually gunge up the cylinder.

As JohnD has asked - why do you need to lubricate it?
