Macerators?

I am buying a house with an en suite that has a macerator en-suite. Does anyone have any experience of these. Noise? Blockages? Am unfamiliar with them so a bit of a sceptic.

If there's no alternative, then they're wonderful!
The rest of the time they're noisy and VERY unpleasant to unblock, especially in basements below drain level.

Thanks...(I think!)....luckily mine will be on the first floor.....and there are two other toilets in the house!! It may be an emergency only facility.
