MAG-PLY - Painting?

Wasn't sure whether to put this here, the building forum or the materials forum. Please move if necessary.

So after some discussion on getting our fire installed i think we will be using Mag-Ply to board out the fire recess.
The fire installer guy said it is ok to paint these boards. You don't need to plaster.

Would this be correct?

If so can you just paint direct to mag-ply or does it need to be prepped somehow?

And what sort of paint would you use in a chimney breast recess where a log burner will be installed?
 
Just normal emulsion paint will be fine! If it were plastered then it would blow off due to the heat. Even with Heat proof plaster it still comes off after time. If it isn't plastered then nothing can come off. Just paint it each year.

I didn't know if Mag-Ply was different (say in preparation) because the surface seems to have a little different texture to it than your normal plasterboard.
