They are essential IMO.
Never a bad idea although in my experiance, not a substitute for having the system properly cleaned and treated.

Try getting a Vaillant warranty call without a Powerflush.
If you don't want to Powerflush get a different boiler.
One without a plate heat exchanger and diverter valve.

proper cleansing of the system and a good quality filter is never a bad idea espescially in this day of high efficiency stainless steel heat exchangers.
