Update: at the start of September 2015 we got an electrician out. He replaced the entire panel with all RCBOs. In the nearly 14 months since then... not a single circuit trip. No problems on any circuit whatsoever. Many thanks for the helpful suggestions. I am very glad to have this annoying problem solved.
