Main stop tap

Evening All

After a leak from the shower, I turned the water off at the main stop tap in the downstairs toilet (quickest point)
On opening the stop tap up its started to drip. The more I open the tap the more it drips. Is there anything a can do to fix the falut or does it need replacing?

tighten the gland nut on top. or undo the gland nut and put some ptfe tape then tighten gland nut.

If I undo the nut, wont water **** out as there no way of turning the water off??

shut the stopcock while you do it.
if it gets that bad replace, by shutting the stopcock in the street.

Yeah just tightened up a little, about 1/4 1/2 turn...
