Do mains smoke detectors require their own circuit or can they be spurred from the lighting circuit?

Either but preference would be to connect them to a regularly used lighting circuit.
It's not quite as easy to switch off the supply to them, also if they were off a lighting circuit then any possbile tripping of a protective device would soon show itself.
