Mains Water to Toilet Cistern

Is there a regulation forbidding connection of a toilet cistern and baisin to the mains instead of to the tank? Any reason why it may not be a good idea?

Both mine are connected to the mains and like me, millions of others must be, since having a combi boiler we have no tanks

The way that toilets are set up is technically known as an "air gap with interposed cistern", classified in water regs as AUK1 type backflow prevention arrangements.

This, broken down into laymans terms, means that the cistern is essentially the same as a tank. Water cannot flow back up the flush pipe to the cistern because if the level in the pan was to get that high it would spill over onto the floor. The ball valve also discharges above the overflow level preventing back siphonage from the cistern into the main.
