Making storage space in lofts...

Hi,

I'm going to board part of my loft for storage and have 3 questions:

1. I've got 30cm of insultation so am thinking about putting 2 by 4 timber over the existing rafters to raise the height. How would I secure this to the rafters? A few companies do heavy duty hex head screws for this which are about 6 inches long. Is that the best bet or is there another way to secure?

2. What spacing should I use for 18mm floorboards? I'm thinking either 40 or 60cm

3. I've only got 30 inches of space for a loft ladder to stow into from the hole and a few places I've looked at don't do such a compact ladder. Does anyone know of anywhere that does?

Sorry for so many questions :-O
Thanks,
Sarah

1) 2x2 or 2x3 would work, just use normal screws, 80mm - 90mm, the timber will be about 45mm deep and it's only to prevent lateral movement.

2) 40mm will be fine.

3) No, tired now, going to bed........zzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
