i have a makita SDS+ drill (just got it a few days ago to replace dead erbauer). earlier i was drillin some joists with a 25mm augur which went thru no problem, until it hit a knot. it would go really slow to get thru and the drill was makin noises/vibrations. bit like if you have a drill with a torque setting and you were over that. will this damage the drill? my old drill used to handle a 20mm augur no problem, but then i often done it in low gear

Sounds like your Makita has a clutch - better than breaking your wrist when your bit binds
