Mandatory ID cards (Brit Card) to be announced tomorrow

I think that digital ID cards should be 100% mandatory!!! I had to have a chip implanted in the back of my neck when i was a pup so why shouldnt you lot have digital ID's!!!

Pfffft

I don’t think anyone is objecting to digital ID, provided it’s federated and not replaced with a single mandatory ID. The moment you make it mandatory, it becomes the default and clear target.

Government are already saying you can delete the ID and not use it again after RTW checks are done.

So they are clearly aware of how unpopular it is.

I predict it will go live and be the final nail for Labour and then get scrapped.

Nothing has actually changed, they've just tweaked the messaging. It doesn't matter if you delete the token on your phone, you're still on the database.

Government to announce their plans tomorrow.

Predominant reason for the card (at present) is for it to be shown if seeking employment i.e. to crack down on illegal workers. Card to be checked against central database to ensure its legitimacy.

Citizens will likely be asked to produce the card in other scenarios (tbc).

To be called the Brit Card (tbc).

Primary driver is to reduce illegal immigration.

If it comes to pass, I'm not convinced an ID card will have much if any positive impact on reducing illegal immigration. Your thoughts?

immigration is just being used as an excuse. this will be step 1. once we are used to the cards it will slowly become something we carry all the time. before we know it we will all be chipped and tracked 24/7. we have been here before, the small changes that seem harmless add up to a huge attack on our freedoms.
i will not be using one. in fact if they introduce them i might start hiring illegals to do things for me, cash in hand, just to spite the government :)
seriously though, are the public really naive enough to think that documented work is the only way illegal immigrants can earn a living? are they really willing to give up their own freedoms to "fight the bloody foreigners"?

Driving licence, passport, etc., the government keeps lots of sensitive data on you - what's so special about an ID card?
I don't have to have a driving licence.

I don't have to have a passport.

I don't have to have credit cards.

I don't have to have a bus pass/travel card/season ticket/Oyster card.

I don't have to have a mobile phone, let alone a smartphone.

As soon as you have an ID card which is mandatory just to be you've taken the first step to a police state.

That's not alarmist hyperbole, I'm not saying that ID cards inevitably lead to that.

But they're the first enabler.

I've got a driving license, credit cards, debit cards, mobile phone, car with number plates, as have most people. All used daily, all work as ID and as a tracker.
Every single one of those is optional.

However impractical it would be to do without them, no law compels you to have any of them.

And that's an unbelievably crucial difference.

By law at the moment, if you've done nothing wrong and the police have no reason to give to arrest you, you don't need to disclose who you are or what you are doing. Making it compulsory to carry ID possibly changes this.
This.

"Papers please".

No - FOAD.

Most? This was specifically in response to being arrested and thrown in jail for not carrying identification papers.

By law at the moment, if you've done nothing wrong and the police have no reason to give to arrest you, you don't need to disclose who you are or what you are doing. Making it compulsory to carry ID possibly changes this. This is not a good thing. And it is not going to reduce immigration or illegal work, so the government are lying about the reason they want this.
We're not talking about that are we.

Oh, we will be.

In a society where the police will manhandle a disabled military veteran in a wheelchair for opposing genocide, we absolutely will be.

For a start it's a digital ID so you don't need to carry it.

So where is it then?

If I walk out one midsummer morning, and someone requires my digital ID, if I'm not carrying it, where will it be? An RFID chip implanted in my neck? A QR tattoo on my forearm?

Nor has anyone said that you'd have to provide it when requested.

Oh you will.

You really, really, REALLY will have to at some point. Anybody who believes otherwise is dangerously naïve.

i will not be using one.

Nor I.

I went to a talk once about the IOT. There'd been a recent story in the news of two babies getting accidentally swapped at the hospital, and the speaker said hey - why not have a system where newborns had an RFID chip implanted immediately after birth. Parents would see it happen and there'd be no more swapping accidents.

The "yeah, great idea" initial reaction in the audience lasted about 2s before the "no, wait, hang on a minute" reaction took over.
