I have 8 Ohm speakers which I want to keep, I intend to buy a new hifi, will I have to make sure it will be compatible with the speakers or can I buy any old setup?

8 ohms is a fairly normal speaker impedance and a relatively easy load for most amplifiers - you should be fine.

However, it would be worth checking for any special requirements in a downloaded owners manual before purchase.

The units I'm looking at want speakers of 6 ohm or 4 ohm..........will this be a problem?

Assuming we are talking modern solid state amplifiers (apparently valve amplifiers were fussier) using a higher impedance speaker shouldn't generally cause any problems (though it will reduce the maximum power output a bit)
