maximum laminate height difference at door threshold?

Hi, wondering what is maximum height difference you can get away with at door threshold for two laminate floors joining. I have in the hall way a thin foam type of underlay which is perhaps 3mm with 8mm laminate on top. I have just purchased the living room laminate which is 12mm. I have not purchased the underlay yet. Any recommendations?
