MDF Keeping colour

I have fitted 2 x MDF radiator cabinets in my kitchen.The MDF cabinetts are a very good match in colour to the kitchen cabinetts. (which have beech doors).
Could I get away with using a polyurathane varnish to seal the MDF & retain the colour?

why not experiment on an offcut with waterd down light oak accrylic varnish to try and give a grain effect then seal with the varnish
