Mdf ok for front/edge of step?

Hi,

I was wandering if it would be ok to use MDF bullnose skirting ( 25mm thick) as the front/edge of a small step? Once stained and varnished would this material be up to the job ? I don't want to use MDF if people stepping on corner of step will trash it.

assuming its internal

i would personaly use pine
mdf if it gets wet falls to bits as it is in effect compact cardboard
