Hello,

I’ve had a shelving unit built to house a home cinema set up. My builders have framed the unit using what I think is 18 mm thickness mdf.
I’ve got two surround sound speakers that I need to position in the unit but I was wondering could I screw them into the mdf framing the unit? The boards are fitted very securely. The speakers weigh 2kg each.
Any advice on whether it’s possible what screws to use etc would be gratefully received.

Thank you

Run the figures through the Sagulator - that will tell you if the bowing will be too much.

In terms of screws the only things to understand is that you need to pilot drill (and if needs be countersink) for the screws and that you shouldn't drill too close to the edge (less than 25mm) so as to avoid cracking

Are you screwing into the edge of the board .?Then stay away from the ends by at least 80 mm as its weak used that way , if you are screwing to the surface then no problem will hold many kilos.Wood screws are fine, nothing special required for speakers.
